Feed him a nutritionally balanced diet that does not contain artificial colors orchemical preservatives (BHA or BHT). Red dyes used to make dog food more appealing to people can cause hyperactivity. Lack of adequate amounts of protein, vitamins, and minerals can also effect your dog's behavior, energy level, and ability to concentrate.
Reward calm behaviour and ignore benaviour you don't want. Wait for your dog to sit before you open gates or doors. Wait for your dog to be quiet before petting him or letting him out of his crate. Figure out what your dog wants (attention, food, to be let out, to go for a ride) and wait for a calm behaviour before giving him what he wants. He should always ask permission before doing anything. Teach him that sitting and looking at you will get him what he wants. You should not command SIT in these instances but wait for the dog to do it on his own.
Give your dog a default behaviour. Something to do if he doesn't know what to do. You can do this simply by rewarding him whenever he lies down if you haven't given him something to do. Teach him that lying quietly will get your attention and barking, whining, or jumping will not.
Give him a calm, quiet place to be by himself. Make it a happy place with things to do. A crate or kennel makes a great "bedroom" for your dog.
Give him things to chew. Dogs need to be dogs. Chewing and dissecting are important aspects of being a dog. Chewing also relieves stress and anxiety.
Give him adequate exercise. Dog's have varied exercise requiremens which need to be met in order to remain calm at other times.
